Plant More Trees

| | Comments ()

Two students from Emily Carr University, Erica Hargreaves and Jacqueline Quenneville, created a remarkable short video-clip as part of their final assignment for their Ecological Perspectives In Design class. The intent of the project was to address one of five major ecological concerns in a creative and inventive way to promote awareness or action towards the issue. The students chose to focus on the topic of "Plant More Trees" for their video as they felt this was a very important subject that they would like to personally involve themselves with and learn more about in the future while helping others do the same.

Protecting Caribou and You

Across the country, CPAWS' chapters are working in their provinces and territories to protect Boreal Woodland caribou. Together, we're asking the federal government to meet its obligation to protect Woodland caribou habitat under the Species at Risk Act.  Here's what's happening:

Nationwide

The goals

  1. April 2008 (expected): To meet its obligation under the Species at Risk Act,  the federal government issues a map of critical Boreal woodland caribou habitat -- let's make sure they finally do it.
  2. by Fall 2009: Following a public consultation, the government releases a Woodland caribou recovery plan to protect their remaining Boreal habitat.

From our friends @ EKOS Communications...

Simulation showing the flooding of Delta BCAs part of the Natural Resource Canada funded project on climate change adaptation in the Fraser Basin of British Columbia, EKOS produced two 12 min. videos designed to stimulate dialogue among local government representatives, scientists and engineers. One video profiles the challenges faced by Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland; the other centers on the challenges faced by the rest of the Fraser Basin. Each video applies peer-to-peer learning by having mayors, councilors and senior policy advisers as the main delivers of the message, supported by clips from three highly respect climate research scientists from University of British Columbia. This video is the one for the Lower Mainland.

Remember Clayoquot?

In light of the fact that Sierra Club's Grassroots Summit will be on BC's Gabriola Island, how about a song from Bob Bossin's album "Gabriola V0R 1X0"? This award-winning video was a stirring look back at the fight for Clayoquot Sound, which is now a World Biosphere Reserve.

{from the Sierra Club of Canada}

People around the world are preparing for the largest planetary day of action yet to stop climate chaos. Join hundreds of thousands of people in more then 87 countries - and in 37 cities across Canada - who will be on the streets to demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that is needed to prevent catastrophic climate chaos. The entire world needs to move as rapidly as possible to a stronger emissions reductions treaty, which is both equitable and effective in preventing dangerous climate change.
